Yoga Etiquette - What to expect in class?

New to yoga? Here are some general rules to make your practice enjoyable for you and your fellow students.

  1. Arrive on time, give yourself time to stow your items, set out your mat, and gather props. Sit and focus on your breathe as you wait for class to begin

  2. Remove shoes before entering the practice area to help keep it clean.

  3. Mind your mood. Gossip, complaining, and negative attitudes are better suited for the local watering hole or the communal kitchen at work. Be gentle and respectful in your communication. Like the saying says, everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind and respect others.

  4. Our teachers will ask and offer gentle assists in class, like guiding you deeper into a pose or shift your position to correct misalignment. Let your teacher know if you prefer to not be touched.

  5. Mind your personal hygiene. First, please bathe, brush your teeth, wash your hair, and use a clean mat and a clean towel. Second, mind heavy perfumes, oils, and colognes, as strong scents travel easily during class.

  6. Devices are a no-no. Leave all devices outside the classroom. Rings & whistles are distracting. Just putting on silent is not enough. Yoga offers you a rare chance to be fully present. A phone distracts you and those around you.

  7. Be aware of your space. it’s common courtesy to stagger your mats so that the person behind you has a clear view of the instructor and the mirror. Give you neighbor some breathing room. Mind your steps, it’s polite to avoid walking on another’s mat.

  8. Minimize conversation. Yoga is a space for reflection, self-study, and focus. Maintaining a quiet atmosphere supports this frame of mind. It is beneficial to your state of mind.

  9. Benefits of savasana (the ending of the class) Designed to restore your nervous system to its default settings and offer your mind a chance to sink into mediation. Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and feel the weight of your body against the floor. It’s your own little R&R opportunity. Take it. It’s considered disrespectful to the teacher and other students and is against studio policy to leave class early. We do understand that life happens. If you absolutely must leave early, position yourself by the door, leave before savasana starts and inform your teacher before class begins. Pack up and scoot out as quietly as you can.

  10. Yoga uses props. If you borrow the studio’s, please clean and return them to their place.
